New York Times Sues Pentagon

The New York Times has filed a lawsuit against the United States — United States Department of Defense and Secretary Pete Hegseth, challenging new restrictions on reporters covering the Pentagon. The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C., alleges that the new policy violates the U.S. Constitution's free press protections and due process provisions. The policy, instituted in October, requires journalists to acknowledge potential security risks and allows for the revocation of press badges if they seek or publish unauthorized information, even if unclassified. Mainstream news outlets, including The New York Times, CBS, CNN, Fox News, and NBC, staged a walkout and surrendered their credentials rather than comply with the rules. The Pentagon has since replaced these outlets with reporters broadly sympathetic to the Donald Trump administration. The lawsuit seeks to block the enforcement of the policy and declare it unconstitutional, arguing it deprives the public of vital information about the United States military and its leadership. Chief Pentagon Spokesman Sean Parnell is also named as a defendant. The Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press has voiced support for The New York Times' efforts, stating the policy gives government officials unchecked power over press credentials.
