Pakistan has appointed Field Marshal Asim Munir as its first Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) for a five-year term, a role he will hold concurrently with his position as Chief of Army Staff (COAS). This historic appointment, approved by President Asif Ali Zardari upon the recommendation of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, follows the 27th Constitutional Amendment aimed at centralizing military command and streamlining decision-making. The new CDF position replaces the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC), which has been abolished. Additionally, Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmad Babar Sidhu received a two-year extension to his service. The appointments resolve earlier speculation about potential delays and political hurdles, with Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar confirming no obstacles existed. Asim Munir is only the second officer in Pakistan's history to achieve the Field Marshal rank, after Omar Ayub.
