India Customs System Overhaul Announced

Nirmala Sitharaman, the Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs of India, announced a complete overhaul of the customs system as her next major reform initiative. The goal is to simplify customs rules, enhance transparency, and reduce the burden of compliance for businesses. Sitharaman drew parallels to past income-tax reforms, which addressed administrative issues and eliminated 'tax terrorism.' She also noted that India has steadily reduced customs duties over the past two years and will continue to review rates. The challenge involves streamlining processes while safeguarding against illicit goods, potentially through increased scanning and reduced direct contact between officials and cargo. India aims to align its customs standards with the World Customs Organization.
