The ongoing trade negotiations between India and the United States are expected to positively impact the markets by potentially reducing tariffs on Indian goods, which have caused a decline in India's exports to the United States. A successful bilateral trade agreement could significantly boost bilateral trade, aiming for USD 500 billion by 2030, benefiting exporters and fostering economic growth in both India and the United States.
India and the United States are holding three-day trade talks from December 10 to 12 in New Delhi, focusing on the first phase of a proposed bilateral trade agreement. The discussions are crucial as India and the United States aim to finalize the initial tranche of the pact, which seeks to address tariffs imposed by the United States on Indian goods. These tariffs, including a 25% tariff and an additional 25% penalty, were levied due to India's purchase of crude oil from Russia. The US delegation is led by Rick Switzer, Deputy United States Trade Representative, with Brendan Lynch as the chief negotiator. The Indian side is led by Darpan Jain, Joint Secretary in the Department of Commerce, and Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal has expressed optimism about reaching a framework trade deal this year. The agreement aims to more than double bilateral trade to USD 500 billion by 2030 from the current USD 191 billion. India's merchandise exports to the United States have declined recently due to the tariffs, highlighting the urgency of these negotiations.
