The widespread flight cancellations by IndiGo have negatively impacted the airline's stock price and reputation, leading to significant financial losses from refunds and operational disruptions. The event has also caused a surge in airfares, affecting the broader travel and tourism industry in India.
IndiGo, India's largest domestic airline, experienced a severe operational crisis over a week, leading to the cancellation of over 4,500 flights across major airports like India — Delhi, India — Mumbai, India — Bengaluru, and India — Hyderabad. The disruptions, which peaked with 1,600 cancellations on a single day, were attributed to a pilot shortage, Airbus A320 software advisories, and the abrupt enforcement of stricter Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL). The India — Directorate General of Civil Aviation (India) (DGCA) issued show-cause notices to IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers and COO Porqueras, formed an inquiry panel, and mandated full ticket refunds and fare caps for affected passengers. Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu also intervened, holding meetings with IndiGo's leadership. IndiGo's parent company, IndiGo, formed a Crisis Management Group to address the situation. The airline has initiated extensive passenger support measures, including ₹610 crore in refunds, and expects to stabilize operations by December 10.
