A murder investigation has been launched by Republic of Ireland — Garda Síochána following a deliberate house fire in Edenderry, County Offaly, on December 6, 2025. The blaze resulted in the deaths of 60-year-old Mary Holt and four-year-old Tadhg Farrell. Another woman, in her 50s, sustained serious injuries and is receiving hospital treatment. Republic of Ireland — Garda Síochána believes the house was attacked by unknown persons and the fire was intentionally started, describing it as a 'reckless, callous and murderous attack on a family home'. Post-mortem examinations are being conducted, and a Family Liaison Officer has been appointed to support the affected families. Minister for Justice Jim O Callaghan condemned the attack, and Independent TD Carol Nolan expressed her condolences.
