India Thali Costs Decline 13%
Analysis based on 7 articles · First reported Dec 08, 2025 · Last updated Dec 08, 2025
The decline in the cost of home-cooked thalis in India, driven by lower vegetable and pulse prices, indicates easing food inflation. This trend is generally positive for consumers' purchasing power and could reduce overall inflationary pressures, potentially influencing monetary policy decisions.
The cost of preparing home-cooked vegetarian and non-vegetarian thalis in India fell by 13% year-on-year in November, according to a report by S&P Global — CRISIL Ratings. This decline was primarily due to a sharp fall in the prices of vegetables like tomatoes (down 17%), potatoes (down 29%), and onions (down 53%). Pulse prices also decreased by 17% due to increased stocks and significant imports of Chickpea, yellow pea, and black gram. The cost of non-vegetarian thalis was further reduced by a 12% drop in broiler prices. While monthly costs showed a slight increase for vegetarian thalis and a slight decrease for non-vegetarian thalis in November, the overall year-on-year trend reflects a positive development for household budgets. Pushan Sharma of S&P Global — CRISIL Ratings Intelligence noted that onion prices are expected to firm up, while potato prices may moderate further.
