UnitedHealthcare CEO Murder Trial

Luigi Mangione, 27, is fighting to exclude evidence from his New York murder case, where he is accused of killing UnitedHealth Group — UnitedHealth Group CEO Brian Thompson, 50, on December 4, 2024. Thompson was shot from behind while walking to an investor conference in Manhattan. Luigi Mangione was arrested five days later in United States — Pennsylvania, after police received a 911 call. During his arrest, Altoona police officer Christy Wasser searched Luigi Mangione's backpack and found a loaded gun magazine, a 9mm handgun, a silencer, and a notebook. The notebook allegedly contained writings showing Luigi Mangione's disdain for health insurers and ideas about killing a CEO at an investor conference. Luigi Mangione's lawyers, including Karen Friedman Agnifilo, argue that the evidence should be excluded because police did not have a search warrant for the initial search. Prosecutors, including Joel Seidemann, contend the search was legal and a warrant was later obtained from United States — Blair County, Pennsylvania. Luigi Mangione has pleaded not guilty to state and federal murder charges, with prosecutors seeking the death penalty in the federal case. Judge Gregory Carro is presiding over the state case.
