Prada India Sandal Collaboration Launch

This event is positive for Prada, as it transforms a negative cultural appropriation incident into a collaborative venture, potentially enhancing its brand image and opening up the growing Indian luxury market. The collaboration also benefits Indian artisans by raising incomes and preserving traditional craftsmanship, which could lead to increased demand for their products.
Prada is launching a limited-edition collection of 2,000 sandals in India, inspired by traditional Indian footwear known as Kolhapuri chappals. This initiative, priced at $930 per pair, is a direct response to a cultural appropriation backlash Prada faced after showcasing similar designs at a Milan show. The Italian luxury group has partnered with two state-backed Indian bodies, India — Sant Rohidas Leather Industries and Charmakar Development Corporation (LIDCOM) and India — Dr. Babu Jagjivan Ram Leather Industries Development Corporation (LIDKAR), to blend local Indian craftsmanship from India — Maharashtra and India — Karnataka with Italian technology. The three-year partnership includes training programs for local artisans in India and opportunities at Prada's Academy in Italy, aiming to raise incomes, attract younger generations to the trade, and preserve heritage. The collection will be available globally in February 2026. While Prada has opened a beauty store in Delhi, it has no immediate plans for new clothing stores or factories in India, viewing India as a potential new market for future expansion.
