India Hikes Copra MSP

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved an increase in the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for copra for the 2026 season. The MSP for milling copra was set at Rs 12,027 per quintal, an increase of Rs 445, and for ball copra at Rs 12,500 per quintal, an increase of Rs 400. This decision aligns with the government of India's 2018-19 Budget pledge to fix MSPs at least 1.5 times the all-India weighted average cost of production. The hike aims to provide better returns to coconut growers and encourage increased copra production to meet growing demand. National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd. (NAFED) and National Cooperative Consumers' Federation (NCCF) will continue to procure copra under the Price Support Scheme. The move has been welcomed by government officials like Ashwini Vaishnaw and Amit Shah, who emphasized its benefit to farmers.
