U.S. Casualties in Syria Ambush

Two U.S. service members and one American civilian were killed in an ambush in central Syria, an attack blamed on the Islamic State. Three other U.S. service members were wounded. Donald Trump, President of the United States, vowed 'very serious retaliation' against the Islamic State. The attack is the first with fatalities for U.S. troops in Syria since the fall of Bashar Assad a year ago. U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth issued a strong warning, stating that those who target Americans will be hunted down. The United States maintains hundreds of troops in eastern Syria as part of a coalition fighting the Islamic State, which the United Nations estimates still has 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
