UN Refugee Forum Progress Review

UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned that the global refugee situation has worsened since the last Global Refugee Forum, citing rising conflicts, increased displacement, stricter border controls, and significant cuts to humanitarian funding. The second Global Refugee Forum Progress Review, co-hosted by the United Nations Refugee Agency (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) and Switzerland, is taking place in Switzerland — Geneva. António Guterres emphasized the need for increased assistance to countries hosting refugees, particularly low- and middle-income nations, and called for greater integration of refugees into local economies and promotion of self-reliance. He also stressed the importance of expanding 'third-country solutions' like family reunification and resettlement. António Guterres noted progress, including the return of approximately one million Syrians, and commended international partners and Filippo Grandi for their efforts in refugee protection.
