Aegean Airlines Resumes Baghdad Flights

Ethiopian Airlines has become the first European carrier in 35 years to operate a direct flight to Iraq — Baghdad International Airport, marking a significant milestone for Iraq's aviation sector. This event signals Iraq's return to the European aviation map and a new phase of recovery for the country, which has been striving to attract foreign investment after decades of instability. The Baghdad–Athens–Baghdad route will operate twice weekly, with potential for expansion. European airlines had ceased direct flights to Baghdad due to security concerns following Saddam Hussein's invasion of Kuwait in the early 1990s. The improved security conditions in Iraq have paved the way for this resumption, with other airlines like Oman Air also expressing interest in future flights.
