US Tariffs Cripple Tamil Nadu Exports

The United States has imposed a 50% tariff on Indian exports, including an additional 25% due to India's purchase of Russian crude oil, triggering a severe crisis in India — Tamil Nadu's export sectors. M. K. Stalin, Chief Minister of India — Tamil Nadu, has written to Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India, urging immediate diplomatic intervention to resolve the issue. The tariffs have led to a wipeout of ₹15,000 crore in confirmed orders and production cuts of up to 30% in India — Tiruppur, the knitwear capital of India. This has resulted in a combined daily loss of ₹60 crore in revenues for exporters in India — Tiruppur, Coimbatore, Erode, and Karur districts, pushing many small and medium enterprises to the brink of collapse. The leather and footwear clusters in Vellore, Ranipet, and Tirupattur are also facing similar setbacks. Lakhs of jobs are in jeopardy, with layoffs and wage deferrals already emerging. International buyers are rapidly diverting orders to competitors like Vietnam, Bangladesh, and Cambodia, which have a current tariff advantage. M. K. Stalin emphasized that once these markets are lost, regaining them would be an uphill battle, posing ominous long-term implications for future employment, especially for women. He implored Narendra Modi to prioritize the resolution of this tariff issue through a bilateral agreement at the earliest possible juncture to revive exporters' fortunes and reinforce India's position as a reliable global manufacturing hub.
