Russia Jails British Fighter Hayden Davies

Hayden Davies, a 30-year-old British man, was sentenced to 13 years in a maximum security prison camp by Russia after being convicted of being a paid mercenary. Russia's Prosecutor General stated that Hayden Davies had joined the International Legion for the Defence of Ukraine in August 2024, undergone military training, and fought against the Russian army in Ukraine — Donetsk, a region Russia claimed in 2022. The United Kingdom Foreign Office condemned the conviction, asserting that Hayden Davies is a prisoner of war entitled to protection under the Geneva Conventions and accused Russia of using prisoners for political and propaganda. Hayden Davies was captured in winter 2024 carrying a U.S.-made assault rifle. This follows a similar case in March where James Scott Rhys Anderson, another British man, was jailed for 19 years by Russia for fighting for Ukraine.
