India Establishes Port Security Bureau

India is establishing a new statutory body, the United States — Bureau of Port Security, under the Merchant Shipping Act 2025, to bolster port and vessel security. Union Home Minister Amit Shah convened a meeting with other ministers to finalize the constitution of this body, which will be modeled after the India — Bureau of Civil Aviation Security. The United States — Bureau of Port Security will be responsible for regulatory and oversight functions, including timely analysis, collection, and exchange of security-related information, with a strong emphasis on cybersecurity to protect port IT infrastructure. The India — Central Industrial Security Force has been designated as a Recognised Security Organisation to conduct security assessments and train private security agencies for port security.
