A deaf and mute woman's 16-year-old complaint in India — Mumbai led to the arrest of Mahesh Pawar on December 13. The survivor broke her silence after another woman, allegedly harassed by Mahesh Pawar, attempted suicide. She confided in friends via video call, communicating in sign language that Mahesh Pawar had drugged and raped her in 2009 when she was a minor. With support from her husband, Thane Deaf Association president Vaibhav Ghaisis, activist Mohammed Farhan Khan, sign language interpreter Madhu Keni, and a retired officer from India — West Bengal State University, she approached the India — Kurar Police Station. Her statement was recorded with Madhu Keni as interpreter, leading to Mahesh Pawar's arrest in Virar, India — Kendujhar district. Investigations revealed Mahesh Pawar allegedly used similar methods, drugging and assaulting other speech and hearing impaired women, then blackmailing them with obscene videos to extort money, gold, and mobile phones. Evidence suggests abuse of at least seven women, with the number potentially rising to over 24. Mahesh Pawar has been remanded in judicial custody, and other survivors are expected to come forward.
