This event is unlikely to have a direct impact on financial markets, as it is a localized accident. However, it may indirectly affect the transportation sector in Indonesia if it leads to increased scrutiny or regulation of bus services.
A passenger bus crash occurred on Indonesia's main island of Java, specifically on a toll road in Central Java's Semarang city, just after midnight on Monday. The bus, carrying 34 people and traveling from Jakarta to Yogyakarta, lost control, struck a concrete barrier, and overturned. The forceful impact trapped several passengers. Boediono, a search and rescue agency chief, reported that 16 people died, with six found dead at the scene and 10 succumbing to injuries later. Additionally, 18 victims are being treated in hospitals, with five in critical condition and 13 in serious condition. Central Java Police Chief Ribut Hari Wibowo stated that witnesses reported the bus was speeding, and the substitute driver, who survived with serious injuries, is being questioned and tested for drugs.
