Odisha orders audit of Mahindra Thar spending

The government of India — Odisha has ordered a special audit into its Forest and Environment Department following allegations of financial irregularities in the procurement and modification of 51 Mahindra & Mahindra vehicles. The department spent approximately Rs 7.1 crore on purchasing the vehicles and an additional Rs 5 crore on modifications, totaling Rs 12 crore. Forest and Environment Minister Ganesh Ram Singh Khuntia signed a note sheet directing the International — Accountant general of India — Odisha to conduct the audit, focusing on the office of the Unknown — Indian Forest Service (Wildlife). The audit will examine whether due process was followed, if prior permissions and Finance Department consent were obtained, the necessity of the installed accessories, and the involvement of any external agencies. Department officials defended the modifications, stating they were essential for enhancing patrolling, monitoring, surveillance, and firefighting capabilities in rugged forest terrains, particularly in areas like Simlipal National Park. The government has warned of strict action if any procedural or financial lapses are uncovered.
