The market for rough diamonds is expected to see increased transparency and strengthened governance due to India's leadership of the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme. This could lead to greater consumer confidence in conflict-free diamonds, potentially boosting demand and ensuring more responsible sourcing practices across the global diamond trade.
India has been selected to assume the chairpersonship of the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme from January 1, 2026, marking the third time the nation will lead this international initiative. The Kimberley Process Certification Scheme, a tripartite effort involving governments, the international diamond industry, and civil society, aims to prevent the trade in 'conflict diamonds.' India will first serve as Vice Chair from December 25, 2025. Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar welcomed the decision, highlighting global trust in India's commitment to integrity and transparency in international trade. As Chair, India will focus on strengthening governance and compliance, advancing digital certification and traceability, enhancing transparency through data-driven monitoring, and building consumer trust in conflict-free diamonds. The Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council, India's nodal agency for the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme, has also expressed its support for India's upcoming leadership role.
