Portland, Maine Old Port Fire

A major fire erupted at the historic Custom House Wharf in United States — Portland, Maine's Old Port waterfront, the day after Christmas. The blaze caused significant damage to aging buildings, including storage and maintenance spaces for fishermen, lobsterman's trap repair shops, and businesses like Nanuq Kayak and Maritime Antique. Several boats were damaged, and at least one sank. The United States — Seward Fire Department, assisted by neighboring communities and the United States — Nebraska State Fire Marshal s Office, battled the fire, deploying a fire boat due to frozen hydrants. Two firefighters sustained minor injuries. While the cause remains under investigation with no indication of foul play, an exact cause is unlikely to be identified due to the extent of the damage. Some businesses, including The Porthole Restaurant and Harbor Fish, have reopened, and a fundraiser has been set up for impacted fishing businesses. Governor Janet Mills monitored the situation.
