SERAP Sues Governors, Wike Over N14trn

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project) has filed a lawsuit against the 36 state governors and Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, along with the Nigeria — Office of the Accountant General of the Federation, over their alleged failure to account for N14 trillion in fuel subsidy savings. The lawsuit, filed at the Nigeria — Federal High Court of Nigeria in Lagos, seeks to compel the respondents to disclose details of how the increased allocations from the Nigeria — Federation Account Allocation Committee, derived from fuel subsidy removal in May 2023, have been spent. Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project argues that despite these significant funds, there has been no improvement in basic services for poor Nigerians, and some states reportedly owe salaries and engage in luxury spending. The organization emphasizes the constitutional right of Nigerians to know how public funds are managed and calls for transparency to prevent mismanagement and ensure the funds benefit vulnerable citizens.
