Gujarat Establishes AI Research Organization

India — Gujarat has granted in-principle approval for the establishment of the Indian AI Research Organization (IAIRO) in India — GIFT City, Gandhinagar, set to be operational from January 1, 2026. This landmark initiative, led by Chief Minister Bhupendrabhai Patel, is a tripartite Public-Private Partnership (PPP) involving India — Gujarat, the India — India, and the Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance (IPA). An estimated budget of Rs 300 crore has been earmarked for the first five years, with each partner contributing 33.33%. The Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance, which includes major pharmaceutical companies like Cipla, Torrent Pharmaceuticals, and Sun Pharma, will serve as the anchor private partner, contributing Rs 25 crore in 2025-26. The IAIRO will function as a non-profit Special Purpose Vehicle under Section 8 of the Companies Act, 2013. Its core activities will include advanced AI research and development, creation of AI-based products and solutions, fostering collaboration among various stakeholders, intellectual property creation, capacity building, and policy-based research. This initiative aligns with the India AI Mission of the Ministry of Information Technology, India — India, and India — Gujarat's AI Action Plan, aiming to position India as a global leader in AI and accelerate sustainable development across sectors like healthcare, education, and agriculture.
