The temporary lifting of sanctions by the United States on Iranian oil is expected to ease the global energy crisis, particularly benefiting India by providing an additional source of crude and LPG. This could lead to a stabilization or slight decrease in oil prices, as India, a major importer, diversifies its supply and reduces reliance on other sources.
The United States has temporarily removed sanctions on Iranian oil for 30 days, allowing India to purchase crude from Iran to alleviate its severe energy crisis. This waiver applies to oil loaded on or before March 20 and discharged by April 19. India, the world's third-biggest oil importer, has not received Iranian oil since May 2019 due to previous US pressure. The ongoing US-Israeli war on Iran has disrupted energy shipments via the Strait of Hormuz, exacerbating India's energy shortages, including liquefied petroleum gas. Iranian oil is being offered to Indian refiners at a premium to Brent Crude, with payments sought in United Statess or India — Indian rupees, as Iran remains cut off from the SWIFT payment system. Indian refiners are cautious about payment mechanisms before finalizing deals with National Iranian Tanker Company. This move follows India's previous purchases of Petroleum after the United States lifted sanctions on it to curb rising oil prices.
