A bird flu (avian influenza) outbreak has been confirmed at a state-run poultry farm in the Koni area of India — Bilaspur district, Chhattisgarh. Between March 19 and 24, approximately 4,400 to 4,744 chickens died out of a total of 5,037 housed at the facility. Samples sent to laboratories in India — Bhopal and India — Pune confirmed the presence of avian influenza, specifically the H5N1 strain. In response, District Collector Sanjay Agrawal issued immediate directives for containment and prevention under the Revised Action Plan for Prevention and Containment of Avian Influenza (2021). A one-kilometre radius around the farm has been declared an 'infected zone' and a 10-kilometre radius a 'surveillance zone'. All poultry birds, feed, and eggs within the infected zone are being destroyed, and their movement is completely banned.
