While not directly impacting financial markets, it underscores the need for sustained investment in health systems, potentially affecting companies in the medical and pharmaceutical sectors.

A new global analysis published in The Lancet Obstetrics, Gynaecology, and Women's Health journal reveals that India, Pakistan, Ethiopia, and Nigeria were among the countries with the highest maternal deaths in 2023. India recorded 24,700 maternal deaths, Pakistan 10,300, Ethiopia 11,900, and Nigeria 32,900. Researchers from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington noted that while maternal deaths have declined over three decades, progress has slowed and remains uneven. The world saw 2.4 lakh maternal deaths in 2023, a decline from 1990, but 104 of 204 countries have yet to meet the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal target of under 70 maternal deaths per one lakh livebirths. Maternal haemorrhage and hypertensive disorders were leading causes. Improved access to antenatal care, safe delivery, and emergency obstetric care are crucial. COVID-19 also temporarily increased maternal mortality.
