The emergency fuel shipment from India to Sri Lanka is expected to stabilize fuel supply in Sri Lanka, potentially easing concerns about energy security and supporting economic activity. This positive development for Sri Lanka could also enhance India's regional influence and trade relations.

Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake thanked Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for sending an emergency fuel shipment of 38,000 MT to Sri Lanka. This shipment, comprising diesel and petrol, arrived in Colombo on Saturday, facilitated by Indian Oil Corporation's local operation, Indian Oil Corporation — Lanka IOC. The assistance comes as Sri Lanka faces fuel supply disruptions due to the West Asia conflict, which has affected its regular suppliers from West Asia and Singapore, partly due to the US-Iran conflict and a blockade in the Strait of Hormuz. Sri Lanka had previously imposed a fuel quota to manage demand and prevent hoarding. The energy ministry confirmed fuel availability until the end of May.
