A new study published in Neurology, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology, found that weaker and more irregular circadian rhythms are linked to a significantly higher risk of developing Dementia UK. The research, led by Wendy Wang of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, involved over 2,000 participants with an average age of 79. Participants wore heart monitors to track rest and activity patterns, and were followed for three years, during which 176 people developed Dementia UK. The study revealed that individuals with the weakest rhythms had nearly 2.5 times the risk of Dementia UK compared to those with stronger rhythms. Additionally, people whose daily activity peaked later in the afternoon (2:15 pm or later) had a 45 percent higher risk. The findings suggest that disruptions in circadian rhythms may affect inflammation, interfere with sleep, and potentially increase amyloid plaques in the brain, which are associated with Dementia UK. The authors hope this research encourages further studies into circadian rhythm interventions, such as light therapy or lifestyle modifications, to potentially prevent the onset of Dementia UK.
