Indian Bank Unions Threaten Strike

The United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), an umbrella organization of nine major bank unions in India, has threatened a nationwide strike on January 27, 2026. The strike is in demand for the implementation of a five-day workweek for bank employees. This demand stems from an agreement in principle reached between the Indian Banks Association (IBA) and UFBU during the wage revision settlement in March 2024, which has not yet been implemented. If the strike materializes, it would significantly impact banking operations in India, especially for public sector banks, for three consecutive days, as January 25 and 26 are already holidays. UFBU argues that other major financial institutions like the State Bank of India, Life Insurance Corporation, and Life Insurance Corporation, as well as government offices, already follow a five-day workweek, making their demand for parity justified. The union has also launched a social media campaign #5DayBankingNow on X (social network) to garner support.
