Uttar Pradesh Reduces Property Gift Duty

The India — Uttar Pradesh Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, has approved a significant expansion of stamp duty concessions on gift deeds for immovable property. This decision extends the benefit of reduced stamp duty, previously limited to agricultural and residential properties, to now include commercial and industrial properties when gifted among family members. The maximum stamp duty payable on such transfers will be capped at ₹5,000, a substantial reduction from the previous rates of 7% in urban areas and 5% in rural areas. Stamp and Registration Minister Ravindra Jaiswal highlighted that this reform aims to make intra-family property transfers more affordable, transparent, and legally streamlined. The Cabinet also clarified the definition of 'family members' and other provisions for smooth implementation. Additionally, the Cabinet approved land allocations for new sub-registrar office buildings in India — Kushinagar district and India — Jhansi, with full exemption from stamp duty and registration fees for these government-owned plots.
