Hindu Man Dies Fleeing Mob in Bangladesh

Mithun Sarkar, a 25-year-old Hindu man, died in Bangladesh after jumping into a canal while fleeing a mob that accused him of theft. This incident is the latest in a series of violent attacks targeting religious minorities in Bangladesh. Other recent victims include Rana Pratap Bairagi, a Hindu businessman shot dead in Jessore; Sarat Mani Chakraborty, a Hindu grocery shop owner hacked to death in Narsingdi; Khokon Chandra Das, who died after being attacked and set on fire in Shariatpur; Amrit Mondal, lynched in Rajbari; and Dipu Chandra Das, lynched and burned in Mymensingh. These incidents have surged under the interim Muhammad Yunus administration, with the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council reporting 51 targeted incidents in December alone. The violence is occurring as Bangladesh prepares for its first parliamentary elections since the 2024 uprising that toppled the Sheikh Hasina government, raising concerns about communal safety and law enforcement.
