Sonam Wangchuk's NSA Detention Challenged

Sonam Wangchuk, a climate activist, was detained under India's National Security Act (NSA) on September 26, 2025, following violent protests in India — Ladakh that resulted in four deaths and 90 injuries. The government, through the India — Leh District Magistrate, accused Sonam Wangchuk of inciting the violence, which demanded statehood and Sixth Schedule status for India — Ladakh. His wife, Gitanjali Angmo, represented by senior advocate Kapil Sibal, has challenged his detention in the India — Supreme Court of India. Gitanjali Angmo argues that Sonam Wangchuk's speech was intended to quell violence, not provoke it, and that facts have been manipulated to portray him as a criminal. She also alleges significant procedural lapses, including the delayed provision of detention grounds and the withholding of crucial video evidence, which she claims violates Constitution of India. The Supreme Court bench, including Justices Aravind Kumar and Prasanna B. Varale, is currently hearing the matter, which remains inconclusive.
