US Seizes Olina Tanker

The United States has seized the oil tanker Olina in the Caribbean, marking the fifth such interdiction in recent weeks, as part of Washington's intensified efforts to curb Venezuelan oil exports and enforce sanctions. The Olina, which was falsely flying the flag of Timor-Leste, had previously sailed from Venezuela fully loaded with oil and was returning to Venezuela following the United States's blockade of Venezuelan oil exports. The United States had previously sanctioned the Olina (then named Minerva M) for being part of a 'shadow fleet.' This action follows the reported seizure of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro by the United States on January 3 and is part of a broader crackdown on alleged drug smuggling and sanctions-busting oil shipments from Venezuela. Venezuela has condemned these interdictions as 'acts of piracy,' further escalating tensions between the two nations. The United States's actions also risk inflaming tensions with Russia, given previous incidents involving Russian-escorted vessels.
