The India — Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully conducted a long-duration ground test of a full-scale actively cooled scramjet engine for its hypersonic missile program on January 9, 2026. This test, carried out at the Scramjet Connect Pipe Test (SCPT) Facility, achieved a run time of over 12 minutes, building upon an earlier subscale test from April 25, 2025. This achievement positions India at the forefront of advanced aerospace capabilities, as hypersonic cruise missiles can exceed five times the speed of sound. The combustor and test facility were designed and developed by DRDL and realized by industry partners. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and DRDO Chairman Samir V. Kamat congratulated the teams involved, emphasizing the importance of this milestone for India's hypersonic cruise missile development program.
