Sikh Procession Disrupted in New Zealand

A right-wing religious group, Destiny Church, led by Pentecostal leader Brian Tamaki, disrupted a Sikh Nagar Kirtan (religious procession) in Tauranga, New Zealand, on January 11. This marks the second such incident in three weeks, following a similar disruption in Auckland. Protesters performed a traditional Maori haka and displayed banners reading 'This is New Zealand not India.' The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) and its president, Amarinder Singh, have strongly condemned these actions, viewing them as an attack on the humanitarian values of the Sikhism faith and a challenge to social harmony. They have appealed to the governments of New Zealand and India to take serious notice and strict action against those responsible. Despite the disruptions, effective coordination between police and volunteers ensured the event concluded without major incidents.
