EU Proposes Joint Military Force

Andrius Kubilius, the European Union's defense commissioner, has proposed the creation of a 100,000-strong 'European military force' and a 'European Security Council'. This initiative is a response to growing concerns over the United States' long-term commitment to European security, particularly in light of rhetoric from Donald Trump and the United States' potential shift of focus towards China. The proposed military force aims to eventually replace the 100,000 United States troops currently stationed in Europe, serving as a backbone for the continent's defense. The European Security Council, potentially including the United Kingdom, would facilitate quicker decision-making on defense matters, with an initial focus on changing the dynamics of the war in Ukraine to prevent Kyiv from losing. While ideas for a central European army have existed for years, they have struggled to gain traction due to nations' reluctance to cede control over their militaries. However, the current geopolitical climate, including the threat posed by Russia, is prompting a re-evaluation of institutional defense readiness within the European Union.
