Mamata Banerjee Flags AI Electoral Errors

Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of India — West Bengal, has repeatedly written to Chief Election Commissioner Bhuvneshwar Kumar, alleging significant errors and procedural flaws in the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. She claims that AI-driven digitisation of the 2002 voters' list led to widespread data mismatches, wrongful categorisation of genuine voters, and forced re-establishment of identity despite prior corrections. Mamata Banerjee also accused the India — Election Commission of India of disregarding statutory processes, failing to issue proper acknowledgements for submitted documents, and conducting a 'mechanical' hearing process devoid of human sensitivity. She highlighted the human cost, attributing 77 deaths, suicide attempts, and hospitalisations to the exercise, and condemned the harassment of eminent citizens like Amartya Sen and Bala Mohammed. The Chief Minister also criticized the treatment of female voters who changed surnames after marriage, calling it a 'grave insult'.
