Taiwan Arrest Warrant for OnePlus CEO

Taiwanese prosecutors have issued an arrest warrant for Pete Lau, the CEO of Chinese smartphone maker BBK Electronics — OnePlus, alleging illegal business operations and recruitment of over 70 employees in Taiwan since 2014. Two Taiwanese citizens have also been indicted for assisting Pete Lau. The allegations fall under Taiwan's 'Act Governing Relations Between the People of the Taiwan Area and the Mainland Area', which restricts Chinese companies from setting up local operations or hiring locally without formal government approval. BBK Electronics — OnePlus, a sub-brand of Oppo, allegedly used a Hong Kong shell company to establish an unapproved branch in Taiwan for smartphone software R&D, verification, and testing. This action is part of a broader campaign by Taiwan to curb what it perceives as illegal poaching of its high-tech talent, particularly in the semiconductor and electronics sectors, by Chinese companies. Taiwan has previously investigated other Chinese companies like Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation and issued warrants for executives of firms like Foxconn, and taken action against companies like Tokyo Electron and Intel for alleged intellectual property violations.
