The detention of the MT Valiant Roar and its crew by Iran could lead to increased shipping costs and insurance premiums for vessels operating in the region, impacting the oil and gas industry. The ongoing diplomatic efforts by India highlight potential geopolitical tensions that could affect trade routes and energy supply chains.

Shipping Oil and Gas

On December 8, 2025, the MT Valiant Roar, a vessel owned by Glory International FZ LLC, was intercepted and detained by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in international waters near Dibba Port, UAE. The Iranian authorities accused the vessel of smuggling 6,000 MT of fuel, while the crew members claim they were carrying Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oil. Sixteen Indian crew members were onboard and have been detained since. The India — India–Iran relations has repeatedly urged Iran for consular access and communication with the families since December 14, 2025, but access has not been granted. The Embassy also intervened with the Iranian navy to arrange emergency food and water supplies for the ship in early January. Family members of the detained crew have appealed to Narendra Modi and approached the India — Delhi High Court, which issued notice to the Union government.
