The Which? annual energy supplier rankings highlight significant disparities in customer service among major UK providers. Poor performance by large firms like Iberdrola — ScottishPower, Électricité de France, and Centrica — British Gas could lead to customer churn as consumers are encouraged to switch to better-performing suppliers like E (Gas and Electricity) and Octopus Energy, potentially impacting market share and profitability for the lower-ranked companies.
Which?, a consumer group, released its annual ranking of UK energy suppliers based on a survey of almost 12,000 customers and an assessment of 17 firms' practices. Iberdrola — ScottishPower was named the worst supplier with an overall score of 56%, particularly criticized for its complaint handling. Électricité de France followed with 58%, largely due to limited customer service availability, and Centrica — British Gas scored 59%, struggling with complaint resolution and customer switching. In contrast, E (Gas and Electricity) received the highest score of 79%, praised for customer service and clarity, followed by Octopus Energy at 74%. Other top performers included 100Green and Sainsbury s. The report encourages customers to switch providers if dissatisfied, as fixed tariffs are now reliably cheaper than the energy price cap. The lower-ranked companies, including Iberdrola — ScottishPower, Électricité de France, and Centrica — British Gas, have acknowledged the findings but also referenced other metrics like the Citizens Advice scorecard or United Kingdom — Ofgem data, which they claim show better performance or ongoing improvements.
