A study published in the Journal of Animal Ecology reveals that warming temperatures in the Antarctic Peninsula are forcing three penguin species (Adelie, chinstrap, and gentoo) to breed approximately two weeks earlier than a decade ago. This rapid shift, observed between 2012 and 2022, is attributed to a 5.4-degree Fahrenheit temperature increase in breeding grounds. Lead author Ignacio Juarez Martinez and co-author Fiona Suttle from University of Oxford explain that this change disrupts the penguins' food supply, primarily krill and phytoplankton, leading to increased competition, especially for the Adelie and chinstrap penguins, which are specialists. The gentoo penguins, with a more varied diet, are breeding earlier and are more aggressive, displacing other species. This phenomenon, coupled with earlier commercial fishing, threatens the survival of Adelie and chinstrap penguins, with models suggesting potential extinction by the end of the century. Researchers used remote cameras and citizen science via the Penguin Watch website to gather data.
