Ogun State Suspends Awujale Selection

The Nigeria — Ogun State government has ordered the immediate and indefinite suspension of the ongoing selection process for a new Awujale of Ijebuland. This is the second time the process has been halted, with the first suspension occurring in December 2025 due to procedural errors. The current suspension, announced on January 20, 2026, by Ganiyu Hazmat, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, is based on rising tensions, numerous petitions, and unfavorable reports from security agencies and key stakeholders. The government cited the need to maintain public order, protect the integrity of the process, and uphold the veneration of the Awujale stool, which gained significant prestige under the late Oba Sikiru Adetona. The decision is backed by the Obas and Chiefs’ Law of Nigeria — Ogun State, 2021, empowering the Executive Council to intervene in the interest of peace and good governance. The Fusengbuwa Ruling House, responsible for nominating candidates, has been directed to await further instructions. Controversies, including a legal challenge and petitions from Fuji musician K1 De Ultimate regarding alleged unlawful nomination procedures and exclusion, have plagued the selection process. The Committee of Ijebu Professionals has commended the government's intervention as necessary to restore credibility.
