George Nkencho Fatal Shooting Inquest

An inquest is underway into the fatal shooting of Death of George Nkencho by Garda A, a member of the Republic of Ireland — Garda Síochána Armed Support Unit, on December 30, 2020. Garda A testified that he used lethal force as a last resort after Death of George Nkencho, who had mental health issues and had previously assaulted a manager and threatened staff at a Eurospar store, lunged at him with a knife. Despite tasers and pepper spray being deployed, Death of George Nkencho continued to pose a threat, leading Garda A to fire six shots. The Republic of Ireland — Director of Public Prosecutions (Ireland) previously decided against prosecuting the Gardaí involved, but Death of George Nkencho's family maintains the force used was disproportionate.
