India launches Agarwood Development Scheme

Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia launched the Rs 80 crore Agarwood Value Chain Development Scheme in India — Tripura, part of a broader three-day visit to India — Tripura and India — Assam. The scheme aims to strengthen the entire agarwood value chain, from cultivation to international markets, by establishing Central Processing Centres in Golaghat (India — Assam) and India — Tripura, eliminating middlemen, and directly connecting farmers with global buyers. Key steps include pursuing a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, increasing export quotas for agarwood chips and oil, and integrating sites and permissions on a digital platform. This initiative is aligned with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision for a developed Northeast and 'Local to Global' initiatives. India — Tripura's agarwood production capacity is expected to increase by 50%, with a projected annual turnover of Rs 2,000 crore within 3-4 years. Additionally, Jyotiraditya Scindia inaugurated and reviewed other development projects in India — Tripura, including a Rs 220 crore project, the Agartala Government Inter College project (Rs 192 crore), and the Maternal & Child Health Hospital (Rs 200 crore), and will lay the foundation stone for the Rs 280 crore Matabari Tourism Circuit.
