The India — Delhi government, through its Home Minister Ashish Sood, announced a special remission of sentences for eligible convicts on the occasion of Republic Day. The remission scales vary based on sentence length and prisoner category, with women prisoners above 65 years of age and those serving over 10 years receiving the highest remission of 90 days. The special remission is in addition to regular remissions under the India — Delhi Prison Rules, 2018, and applies to convicts sentenced by courts in India — Delhi and undergoing imprisonment as of January 26, 2026, provided no misconduct has been reported in the preceding year.
