The increasing adoption of AI by American workers, as revealed by Gallup, indicates a significant shift in labor markets and potential productivity gains across various industries. While it suggests growth for AI companies like ChatGPT and Alphabet Inc., it also raises concerns about job displacement for less adaptable workers, potentially impacting consumer spending and economic stability in the United States.
A recent Gallup Workforce survey of over 22,000 U.S. workers revealed a rapid increase in AI adoption in American workplaces. Some 12% of employed adults now use AI daily, with nearly half using it at least a few times a year, a significant jump from 21% in 2023. This surge is largely attributed to the commercial boom sparked by generative AI tools like ChatGPT. AI adoption is particularly high in technology and finance sectors, with individuals like Andrea Tanzi of Bank of America using AI daily for tasks. Even in retail and education, employees like Gene Walinski at Home Depot and Joyce Hatzidakis, a high school teacher, are embracing AI tools, including Alphabet Inc.'s Gemini. The AI industry and the United States government are actively promoting AI adoption, but economists like Sam Manning note that while adaptable workers may benefit, approximately 6.1 million U.S. workers, primarily in administrative roles, are heavily exposed to AI and less equipped to adapt, facing potential income shocks. Despite this, few workers are concerned about AI replacing their jobs within the next five years.
