OpenAI Retires GPT-4o from ChatGPT

OpenAI is retiring several of its AI models, including GPT-4o, GPT-4o, GPT-4.1, and OpenAI o4-mini, from its ChatGPT platform on February 13, 2026. This decision comes as the vast majority of users have shifted to newer models like GPT-5, with only 0.1% of users still opting for GPT-4o daily. GPT-4o, initially popular for its multilingual and multimodal capabilities, had been temporarily reinstated in the past due to user feedback. However, concerns about its tendency to overly affirm users and potential psychological harm, leading to lawsuits, also contributed to the decision. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman had previously pledged to give ample notice for such a retirement. The company states that improvements in personality, creative ideation, and customization in GPT-5 and GPT-5 address the needs previously met by GPT-4o. While API access for these models remains unchanged, their removal from ChatGPT aims to allow OpenAI to focus on enhancing the models with the most usage.
