While still employed by Alphabet Inc., Ding secretly affiliated himself with two China-based technology companies, including founding Shanghai Zhisuan Technologies Co., and claimed he could build an AI supercomputer by modifying Alphabet Inc.'s technology. He also applied for a Chinese government-sponsored 'talent plan' to contribute to China's technological growth. The United States — United States Department of Justice and the United States — Federal Bureau of Investigation highlighted this as the first-ever conviction on AI-related economic espionage charges, underscoring efforts to protect American intellectual capital from foreign interests. Ding faces a maximum sentence of 10 years for each theft count and 15 years for each espionage count.
