US Embassy Warns Bangladesh Election Violence

The United States — Embassy of the United States, Dhaka has issued a security alert for American citizens in Bangladesh, warning of potential political violence and extremist attacks during the upcoming parliamentary elections and national referendum scheduled for February 12, 2026. The alert advises US citizens to remain vigilant, avoid demonstrations, and exercise caution around large gatherings. The Bangladesh government has also announced transportation restrictions from February 10 to 12. The Bangladesh Interim Government expressed concern over a recent violent incident involving a Pakistan — Jamaat-e-Islami activist and called for restraint from all political parties, including the Bangladesh — Bangladesh Nationalist Party. The Bangladesh — Bangladesh Election Commission is taking measures to ensure a peaceful and fair election, including protecting minority voting rights and prohibiting government officials from campaigning for the referendum. Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was ousted last year, and her Bangladesh — Awami League party has been banned from participating in these elections by the Muhammad Yunus-led administration.
