The agreement between the Nigeria Governors Forum and the Nigeria — National Sugar Development Council to prioritize sugar projects is expected to attract significant investments into Nigeria's sugar industry, potentially boosting local production and reducing reliance on imports. This initiative could lead to job creation and rural development, positively impacting the Nigerian economy and related industries.
The Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) has agreed to prioritize sugar as a key product for industrial development across Nigerian states, partnering with the Nigeria — National Sugar Development Council (NSDC). This decision follows requests by Kamar Bakrin, Executive Secretary of the NSDC, to accelerate the sugar sector's development, aiming for self-sufficiency, job creation, and reduced raw sugar imports. The NGF will include sugar projects as priority beneficiaries in engagements with development partners and will collaborate with the NSDC to prepare investor-ready projects. Abdulateef Shittu, Director-General of the NGF, affirmed the commitment to focus on sugar investments for rural development. The initiative targets attracting over $2 billion in revenue, with the Nigerian sugar industry currently valued at $2 billion and potentially $7 billion with the African Continental Free Trade Area. Eleven states have been identified as suitable for profitable sugar production.
